“‘When the foundations are destroyed, what can the righteous do?’ The Lord is in His holy temple; the Lord’s throne is in heaven. His eyes watch; He examines everyone. (…) For the Lord is righteous; He loves righteous deeds. The upright will see His face.” Psalms 11:3-4, 7 HCSB
Is there anyone not seeing the devastation in the world? Wars, flooding, sickness… ‘what can the righteous do?’ It’s encouraging to see the response of people coming to the aid of the flood victims. These things should all be good reminders to us to make sure we’re firmly ‘planted’ in Jesus! Jesus explained what happens when we are not:
“When anyone hears the word about the kingdom and doesn’t understand it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is the one sown along the path. And the one sown on rocky ground — this is one who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy. Yet he has no root in himself, but is short-lived. When pressure or persecution comes because of the word, immediately he stumbles. Now the one sown among the thorns — this is one who hears the word, but the worries of this age and the seduction of wealth choke the word, and it becomes unfruitful. But the one sown on the good ground — this is one who hears and understands the word, who does bear fruit and yields: some 100, some 60, some 30 times what was sown.” Matthew 13:19-23 HCSB
We live in a very broken world that seems to be falling apart at the seams. Yet God’s invitation to Life with Him still stands. Today, we should search our hearts for the things that would distract us, the things that could turn our hearts away from the True Living God. We can bring our cares to Him and leave them in His hands. We should pray that His ‘will is done on earth, just as it is in heaven.’
“I have asked one thing from the Lord; it is what I desire: to dwell in the house of the Lord all the days of my life, gazing on the beauty of the Lord and seeking Him in His temple.” Psalms 27:4 HCSB
