Guard

“More than anything you guard, protect your mind, for life flows from it.” ‭‭Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭23‬ ‭CEB‬‬

I find it interesting that 2 different versions of this verse tell us to guard 2 different things.

“Guard your heart above all else, for it is the source of life.” Proverbs‬ ‭4‬:‭23‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

So what is it- our mind or our heart? Or both? They are, really, very connected. They tell each other what to do, don’t they? We feel with our heart. And we can also train our heart with our mind.

I think of King David. His emotions are all over the place in the Psalms. Did he write from his mind or his heart? Or both? How did he go from the first verse of this Psalm to the last verse?

“Oppose my opponents, Lord; fight those who fight me. (…)

And my tongue will proclaim Your righteousness, Your praise all day long.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭35‬:‭1‬, ‭28‬ ‭HCSB‬‬

Maybe all those lonely times spent tending the sheep. Alone in the hills with the Good Shepherd. Learning from him. Putting His trust in Him. Finding that God is our Protector and Defender.

Today we should pray that God will help us to guard both our heart and our mind as we take time to sit at the feet of our Good Shepherd, Jesus.

“Come to Me, all of you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest.” Matthew‬ ‭11‬:‭28‬ ‭HCSB‬‬
