“And God spoke all these words: ‘I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of Egypt, out of the land of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me.’” Exodus 20:1-3 NIV
God rescued the people of Israel from slavery. Miraculously. They witnessed His rescue, His provision, His care for them. Now He was about to reveal Himself to them in a new way. He called Moses, their leader whom He had chosen for them, to go up the mountain to receive detailed instructions on how to live in their new freedom. He gave very specific instructions on how to even prepare for that event. He is Holy. Deserving reverence.
“Put limits for the people around the mountain and tell them, ‘Be careful that you do not approach the mountain or touch the foot of it. Whoever touches the mountain is to be put to death.’” Exodus 19:12 NIV
Much later in time, God revealed Himself in quite a different way. Jesus stepped into our world. He Himself took this death punishment for us. (“for all have sinned“ Romans 3:23)
And now the God of deliverance, this Holy God, our King Who is above all kings, offers us a new life with Him!
“Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls. For my yoke is easy and my burden is light.” Matthew 11:28-30 NIV
Today we should make ourselves ready to fully trust this Holy God Who offers us new life in Him. We should pray that as we repent and surrender ourselves to Him, He will keep us in His place of peace no matter what we face each day. He is Mighty to save! Hallelujah!
