Story

I love a good story! Reading Mark 4:35-41, I wondered how I would have reacted.

“But soon a fierce storm came up. High waves were breaking into the boat, and it began to fill with water.” V. 37
Keep in mind, these men were fishermen. They knew the sea and its power.

“Jesus was sleeping at the back of the boat with his head on a cushion. The disciples woke him up, shouting, ‘Teacher, don’t you care that we’re going to drown?’” V. 38
They knew the power of the sea, but they still did not yet know the power of Jesus.

“When Jesus woke up, he rebuked the wind and said to the waves, ‘Silence! Be still!’ Suddenly the wind stopped, and there was a great calm.” V. 39
Suddenly. Storm to calm at the sound of His voice.

“Then he asked them, ‘Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith?’” V. 40
At what point did they realize Who Jesus is? They’d been following Him, listening to Him, learning from Him, yet…
“The disciples were absolutely terrified. ‘Who is this man?’ they asked each other. ‘Even the wind and waves obey him!’” V. 41

How many stories are we participants in where we think we’re going to drown, but actually it’s going to be a story of God’s faithfulness to us? The disciples were in a story but they didn’t know it. They just thought they were going to drown.

Today, we should pray that God will not only calm our storms, but that He will help us trust Him more. We really can rest when we’re fully trusting Him.
