“But immediately Jesus spoke to them, saying, ‘Take heart; it is I. Do not be afraid.’” Matthew 14:27 ESV
How would we react if we saw someone walking on top of water? Keep in mind that these were experienced fishermen.
They had witnessed miracles Jesus had done, but not this one. They hadn’t seen Jesus do this thing, so they didn’t know He could.
“He said, ‘Come.’ So Peter got out of the boat and walked on the water and came to Jesus.” Matthew 14:29 ESV
Impetuous Peter! Of course he’s that one to say, ok, let’s do some water-walking! Until… “But when he saw the wind, he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, ‘Lord, save me.’” Matthew 14:30 ESV
Oops, this is real life, and in real life water-walking is not a thing. BUT before we get too critical of Peter, we see his response – “Lord, save me!”
Today we should pray that when we are in over our heads, in either circumstances not of our choosing, or living with consequences for things that were our choosing, we call out to Jesus, Lord, save me!
“Deep calls to deep at the roar of your waterfalls; all your breakers and your waves have gone over me. (…)
Why are you cast down, O my soul, and why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.” Psalm 42:7, 11 ESV
